Alex's Top 5 Hateable Movie Villains

In no particular order, these actors do an amazing job at making me want to jump out of my seat and punch them in the face.

Warden Norton (The Shawshank Redemption)

Played by Bob Gunton, Warden Norton is a corrupt prison warden who is not afraid of killing innocent prisoners to save his own hide. Our protagonist Andy Dufrene ends up assisting him in laundering money from Norton’s scams and kickbacks. When Andy encounter another prison mate, Tommy, who has knowledge that could prove Andy innocent, Norton kills Tommy so that he won’t lose his money assistant. I won’t ruin the ending for those who haven’t seen it.

Commodus (Gladiator)

Played by Joaquin Phoenix, Commodus is the stereotypical movie villain. His father, emperor of Rome, cedes the throne and decides to appoint his leading commander, Maximus, to take his place. Commodus hears of this and kills his father before anyone had ever heard of the father’s wishes for Aurelias to take the crown. Commodus has Aurelias’s family killed and Maximus ends up becoming a gladiator. In one of the best lines of revenge “My name is Maximus Decimus  Meridius, commander of the armies of the North, General of the Felix Nation, loyal servant to Marcus Aurelius, father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife, and I will have my revenge in this life or the next.” Badass Russell Crowe, here we come. I guess you’ll have to see the movie to figure out what happens.

King Edward I "Longshanks" of England (Braveheart)

Played by Patrick McGoohan, Longshanks takes a very special place on the very front of my brass knuckles. As the psychopathic tyrant of the film Braveheart, in the midst of a war between Scotland and England, he grants his nobles primae noctis, which is the right of the lord to take a newly married Scottish woman to bed on her wedding night, with the idea of “breed[ing] them out.” Longshanks emotionally and physically abuses his son, a wimp for the crown, and he is overall just a vile human being.

Evil Scale: 4 punches

Hilly Holbrook (The Help)

This Southern belle makes my list for simply being such a vile creature. Played by Bryce Dallas Howard, Miss Holbrook just creates an almost automatic disgust. Like, lady, take a chill pill! With such a hateful agenda beneath her claims on Southern hospitality, I really want to slap her.

Evil Scale: 2 punches

Percy Wetmore (The Green Mile)

Played by Doug Hutchison, Percy is a prison guard whose favorite hobby is aggravating the prisoners. One particular prisoner is Eduard “Del” Delacroix, an old man who acquires a pet mouse who Percy has no qualms about smashing via foot. Fortunately, John Coffey—a healer—is able to save the mouse. Later on, he sabotages Del’s execution by not soaking the sponge prior to it being placed on Del’s head when in the electric chair, caushing Del to, essentially fry to death. Eventually, revenge is had, but until then, he needs a few punches in the face.
