Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. There’s this teenage girl, and she’s kind of awkward and doesn’t fit in, and then one day she discovers this whole magical world she never knew about, and it turns out that she’s actually really special and powerful and there’s also this hot guy who seems like kind of a jerk but is also totally dreamy and… Oh, you say you have heard this one before? Often? Over the past ten years or so of books aimed at young girls? Well, screw you, one of ‘em’s a movie now.
The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, whose trailer will appropriately be shown before screenings of Twilight Breaking Dawn Part 2 The Legend Will Just Not End Goddamn It, is the first adaptation of the book series by Cassandra Clare, whose name sounds like a YA protagonist in her own right. The girl will be Lily Collins, the guy will be Jamie Cambell Bower, and the magic types are angels, demons, and half-angel demon hunters. The trailer is pretty exposition-heavy, but it also seems to promise more action and less staring than Twilight. Then again, Bela Tarr films have more action than Twilight.
The film is slated for August of next year, after the expected round of summer films in which boys get secret superpowers and incongruously hot love interests. See, everybody gets pandered to one way or another.
