It's finally official! Marvel has just announced that Doctor Strange and Ant-Man will be getting their own films. The two will be part of "Phase Three," with all of the films so far being the first phase, and everything between now and Avengers 2 being the second. That's still a ways off, at least two years, but it's definitely something we can look forward to.
This is absolutely huge news considering just how awesome a Doctor Strange movie could be. Also worth noting is that while the Ant-Man movie has been official for some time, this is the first we've heard of its "canonicity" in terms of the Avengers-verse that Marvel has been building.
The fact that Edgar Wright's film is going to exist in the same space as the rest of the Avengers movies is pretty exciting stuff. This could not only mean that Ant-Man might be joining Avengers 3, but also that Wright might be in for more directorial appearances with Marvel.
Kevin Feige spoke with MTV News, saying the following about the two characters,
“He's a great, original character, and he checks the box off this criteria that I have,” Feige says of Doctor Strange. “He's totally different from anything else we have, just like Guardians of the Galaxy. He's totally different from anything we've done before, as is Ant-Man, which keeps us excited."
Avengers 2 will hit theaters in 2015. Until then, we have sequels to Thor and Iron Man in the mix for this year, and Captain America and the rest of the gang next year. It's an exciting time to be a Marvel fan!
