For those of us who are eagerly awaiting GoT Season 3, the recently released teaser trailer is very promising. It's definitely a ‘less is more’ approach that is light on plot and characters, but heavy on creepy atmospherics. The teaser has an ominous three-eyed black raven soaring over two landscapes, flying from a medieval-flavored fantasy vista to a gleaming contemporary cityscape.
The symbolic visual journey of the omen-bearing magical beast from ‘their world’ to ‘ours’, through a compelling mystical landscape, is highlighted by an eerie folksong, The Rains of Castamere, which accompanies the visuals.
For those who aren't quite there in the series, the song warns of the Lannister family’s might over its foes, and appears at various points throughout the books and the TV show. This real-world arrangement is performed by Matt Berninger of fantastic indie rock act The National, known for their terribly sad songs. I defy you to listen to their song Sorrow not get a little weepy. (They also contributed a song to the Portal 2 soundtrack! -Ed)
GoT is known for killing off its characters, something fans of the novels relish. I, for one, did not mourn the SEASON ONE SPOILER departure of Ned Stark, even though it was one of Sean Bean’s best roles. The Starks, with the exception of Arya, are a dreary bunch.
But all these deaths means more character introduction, a subject explored in brief in this Season 3 “Invitation to the Set” promo.
In particular, Irish character actor Ciarán Hinds as Mance Rayder is especially tantalizing casting – especially for those of us dying to see the world beyond the Wall imagined.
The teaser offers an ill omen for the warring people of the Seven Kingdoms. Roll on March 31st!
