Well, this is interesting. The Latino Review has reported that Marvel is surprisingly inquiring into the availability of both Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler for a major role in their upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy film, which will be based on the comic book superhero team of the same name.
Before fans of the comics lose their mind, neither of the two comedic actors is up for the role of the lead character Star-Lord. Casting for that character is reportedly down to a competition between younger actors Jim Sturgess or Zachary Levi. Carrey and Sandler are more likely to be up for a role that will add comedic relief to the film. Speculation is that they would play a supporting Guardian of the Galaxy like Rocket, the brilliant military tactician who also happens to be a raccoon, or Groot, a sentient tree-like creature.
Of the two, Sandler might be the more available. His only confirmed future project at the moment is Grown Ups 2, which is in post-production. Carrey on the other hand, has Kick-Ass 2 and The Incredible Burt Wonderstone scheduled for release this year, and Dumb and Dumber To [sic] announced for 2014.
As Carrey and Sandler have primarily been the stars of all their films to date, they may be unwilling to take only a supporting part in this film. However, Carrey is taking a smaller role in Kick-Ass 2 and if the rumors of Rocket or Groot are true, then the two actors might only need to perform voice-acting and possible motion capture techniques for Guardians. The relatively small workload might convince one of them to sign on.
Regardless, no official casting for the film has yet been released, so it is best to take these rumors with a grain of salt for the moment.
Guardians of the Galaxy will be released August 1, 2014.
