Excelsior! It's Comic book legend and Marvel Comics Godfather Stan Lee's 90th Birthday today!
Co-creator of Spider-man, Iron Man, The Hulk, The X-men, Thor, The Fantastic Four (basically everyone in Marvel but Wolverine), Stan Lee's contribution to American popular culture is undeniable.
Starting out as an assistant for Joe Simon and Jack Kirby's original Captain American run (thanks to his cousin Jean, who was the publisher's wife), Lee graduated to interim editor at the ripe old age of 19. Forever striving to write the great American novel, Lee grew increasingly tired with the Comics Industry thanks to the infamous Comic's Code Authority.
In the late 1950's, his then publisher asked Lee to create a superhero team that could compete with DC's newly formed Justice League. Already planning to leave the industry and having little to lose, Lee's wife urged him to us the opportunity to create his own kind of stories. In 1961, Lee created the Fantastic Four, a team of flawed, bickering, and tragic characters, mixing elements of science fiction, horror, and romance stories.
Fifty year later, and Lee's characters have made Marvel Comics a multi-million dollar company, with films, television shows, video games, etc.
Not bad for a poor boy from the Bronx huh?
