'Killer Instinct' is not Free-to-Play, Just a 'Generous Demo'

A couple weeks ago, Microsoft announced its pricing scheme for Killer Instinct at Gamescom. In an interview, Microsoft Studios' Creative Director, Kenn Lobb spoke out saying the game is "the world's most generous demo."

Elaborating on that, Lobb explained that the game is not free-to-play.

What is free-to-play? It's a thing you really can't ever own at all. Day one, if you want to buy our game, buy it. You own it. There's no grind for little coins that unlock things later. None of that.

The current purchasing scheme includes three packages:

  • Pay nothing and download the game on the Xbox One.  This includes Jago, allowing you to go through his tutorial and practice mode, as well as play online against other players.  Over time, Jago will switch out allowing players to try out someone else.  Extra characters will cost $4.99/£3.99/€4.99.
  • The "Combo Breaker Pack" costs $19.99/£16.99/€19.99 and includes the first eight characters.
  • The "Ultra Edition" is priced at $39.99/£34.99/€39.99 and comes with the first eight characters, accessory and costume packs, and the original Killer Instinct.

Why release the game in this fashion?  Lobb wants more people to play fighting games.  By offering a free version of Killer Instinct, the hope is to "get the most people possible back into fighting games."

While the idea of the "generous demo" sounds awesome, we'll have to wait and see how it actually pans out at launch.
