Once again, welcome back to another gripping installment of New Music Monday, where we attempt to peel off all of the hangover goo from your wild weekend and prepare you to cope with yet another miserable work week by looking at all of the great new music that's going to be released this week. Some of it you may have heard, and some of it may come as a surprise, but I'll do my best to tell you what to seek out and what to avoid this week. So squeegee your third eye everyone, let's look into the future and see what you'll be listening to this week.
The Big News!!
The big news this week comes from rappper Big Sean, whose sophomore release, Hall of Fame, will be released this week. Much has been said of this record lately after Kendrick Lamar went weapons grade plutonium on the entire rap world a few weeks back on the track "Control". Unfortunately, "Control" is not on the record, but it does sport an impressive guest list, including names like Lil' Wayne, 2 Chainz, Nas, and Common, amongs others.
People seem to really like Avenged Sevenfold. I don't, but that's probably one of my many shortcomings. Their new album is called Hail to the King and it promises to both slay the eardrums of listeners and sell a lot of copies. Plus the cover art is a clear Danzig rip off, which is awesome.
The Return of the Archduke
The new Franz Ferdinand LP, Right Thought, Right Words, Right Action, is, like all Franz Ferdinand records, a perfect mix of geniusy popology and geeky quirkiness. I don't love it, and I don't hear a "Take Me Out" like hit on it, but think it is a solid piece of angular alterna-pop that can easily soundtrack any fledgling party. Like every FF release it's impossible to hate and well worth a listen.
I'm not going to be the only one raving about this release this week, but what the hell. Drumgasm is an awesome new project by drummers Zach Hill (Hella, Death Grips), Janet Weiss (Sleater Kinney, Quasi, Wild Flag) and Matt Cameron (Soundgarden, Pearl Jam), collectively known as Weiss / Cameron / Hill. Supposedly they just set up three drum kits, turned on a mic, and started playing. I've heard bits and pieces, can't wait to hear the whole thing.
