Peter Mayhew, the man who played Chewbacca in the original Star Wars trilogy, spends most of his time in a quiet way now, traveling from convention to convention around the world meeting and greeting fans. It was during one of these trips from Denver, Colorado to Dallas, Texas that Mayhew encountered a Star Wars problem.
TSA agents were suspicious Mayhew’s cane may have been a weapon of sorts. Being as Mayhew is 7’2 his cane tends to be larger and heavier than the average person’s. What sent them overboard was the fact that his cane is a light saber inspired cane. Yes, it looks like a light saber. Due to these suspicions, TSA took his cane away.
Mayhew, who was not about to lose his much loved light saber cane, released his Chewbacca roar and turned to his twitter account @TheWookieRoars. Here are a few of Mayhew’s tweets from that day.
“In the caffufel of the cane”… “Giant man need giant cane…small cane snap like toothpick…besides…my light saber cane is just cool…I would miss it.”
To top all of those, “Magic words to TSA are not “please” or “thank you”. It’s “twitter”… cane released to go home.”
Did Mayhew’s tweets have anything to do with the TSA relinquishing the light saber cane? Of course, the TSA says no, but I have to wonder if Mayhew’s 25,000 followers might have influenced the TSA’s decisions. With all of the bad press the TSA receives on a daily basis I do not see how they can afford any more and over something so small. I believe they knew where this would lead and so choose to back down.
I must admit I would love to have that light saber cane or at least one like it. I leave you with this, when the Wookie roars…the wookie wins. Don’t fight the wookie.
