A couple of fans were treated to some footage of the new Robocop film yesterday at Comic-Con. Director Jose Padilha, along with some of the cast, including Joel Kinnaman, Abbie Cornish, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Keaton, were on location to present the footage, which apparently showed off some of the new elements that distinguish this Robocop from the original.
One of the biggest differences seems to be the more contemporary setting, with OmniCorp building droids and robots not for civil protection, but for military use. Likewise, main character Alex Murphy is no longer a cop who gets gunned down by thugs, but is instead burned very badly in a car bomb incident.
From what I've read of the footage (having not seen it myself), it seems as though this iteration of Robocop is taking a bit more cerebral of a direction with the material. Hopefully, though, they don't forget what made the original so great.
