Sin City: A Dame to Kill For: What We Know So Far

If you are a fan of the original Sin City, like me, then you are probably of two minds about all of the recent casting announcements for its sequel Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. On the one hand, you are excited that so many big name actors are going to be in the film. On the other, you are overwhelmed trying to keep track of it all.

Who will be returning from the first film? Who will be replacing original actors? Who will be playing new characters? If those questions are swirling through your head, then fear not! What follows is the complete-as-of-this-moment guide to A Dame to Kill For casting. Keep in mind that at the rate these casting announcements are being released, this guide may go out of date very quickly.

But before we get to that, here is quickly what we know about the plot of Sin City: A Dame to Kill For so far. Like the original movie, it will be an anthology of four separate stories directed by Robert Rodriguez. Two of the segments, “Just Another Saturday Night” and the titular “A Dame to Kill For,” will be based on stories from the original Frank Miller graphic novels. The other two segments, including one entitled “The Long, Bad Night,” will be original stories.  A Dimension Films official press release offers a few additional details on the “A Dame to Kill For” segment:

In SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR, Dwight [played by Clive Owen in the original Sin City] is hunted down by the only woman he ever loved, Ava Lord, and then watches his life go straight to hell.  Chronologically, this story takes place prior to “The Big Fat Kill” (featured in the film FRANK MILLER’S SIN CITY) and explains how Dwight came to have a dramatically different face.

Now, on to the casting guide. Spoilers for the first film follow, obviously.

Original Cast Members Returning:

Clive Owen as Dwight – While much of “A Dame to Kill For” will feature Dwight played by a dramatically different actor with a dramatically different face, Owen will return for the sequel in at least a small capacity.

Mickey Rourke as Marv – Marv was killed in the previous film, but as portions of the “A Dame to Kill For” segment act as a prequel to those events, he will be featured in that segment in addition to acting as the main character in “Just Another Saturday Night.”

Rosario Dawson as Gail – Dawson’s tough talking, kick-ass prostitute will reappear in “A Dame to Kill For.”

Jessica Alba as Nancy – Marv’s favorite kidnap-victim-turned-stripper will play a role in “Just Another Saturday Night.”

Bruce Willis as Hartigan – Like Marv, Hartigan died in the first film. However, the events of “Just Another Saturday Night,” take place in the middle of Hartigan’s segment in Sin City, so Willis is returning for the sequel.

Michael Madsen as Bob – Now that Madsen has completed his recent illustrious gig on Celebrity Big Brother 9, he is free to reprise his role as Hartigan’s corrupt partner.

Jaime King as Goldie and/or Wendy – King will definitely be returning, but it is uncertain whether she will be playing just one or both of her twin femme fatales from the first film.

New Cast Members Replacing Old Cast Members:

Josh Brolin as Dwight – Brolin will be the aforementioned dramatically different actor with the dramatically different face playing Dwight for the majority of the “A Dame to Kill For” segment.

Jamie Chung as Miho - Chung will be replacing Devon Aoki as the mute character Miho. The reasons for Aoki’s leaving are uncertain, but probably do not involve an inability to remember his lines.

Dennis Haysbert as Manute – The one-eyed Manute was played by the late Michael Clarke Duncan in the first film and will be crossing paths with Dwight again in the sequel. Replacing Duncan is a big challenge for any actor, but with Haysbert, best known today as the All State Insurance spokesperson, the role of Manute is in good hands.

New Cast Members Playing New Characters:

Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Johnny – While JGL was announced as part of the film a few weeks ago, details on his character have only recently been revealed.  He will play Johnny, a cocky gambler who disguises a darker mission to destroy his most foul enemy at his best game in the original story “The Long, Bad Night.”

Christopher Meloni as a Policeman - The actor best known for playing Detective Elliot Stabler on Law and Order: SVU has snagged another law enforcement role.

Ray Liotta, Juno Temple, Jeremy Piven – These three actors were just announced to be joining the film, but their roles are being kept under wraps.

??? as Ava Lord – Finally, perhaps the most important role in the film has still not been cast yet. Lord is the titular “Dame to Kill For” and the only woman that Dwight ever loved. Angelina Jolie was originally rumored to be playing the character, but these rumors have since proven unfounded. As of now, it’s unclear whether they’ve found someone worth killing for to fill the role or not.

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For will be released October 4, 2013.
