The world of Snowpiercer is absolutely inspired — and a tad terrifying. In the year 2031, our planet has slipped into an Ice Age, and the few remaining survivors are confined to a rickety, segregated train. Boasting an absolutely delicious high concept premise, graphic novel roots, and an A-list cast, Snowpiercer is the stuff sci-fi dreams are made of.
Recognize any famous faces? Joining headliner and occasional superhero Chris Evans is a bevy of hard-hitting talent: John Hurt, Tilda Swinton, Ed Harris, Jamie Bell, Alison Pill, and Octavia Spencer. Snowpiercer was written and directed by Joon-ho Bong, a hit maker overseas who will be marking his domestic debut with this action-packed feature.
Unfortunately, Snowpiercer is in release date purgatory. The Weinstein Company, who acquired the rights to distribute the film in the United States and other English-speaking territories, is juggling a few options, ranging from this summer to 2014, but finding a place for this darkly imaginative version of the future is tricky — it's not quite blockbuster material, not quite Oscar bait.
However, if you happen to find yourself in South Korea this summer, you're in luck! The movie is set to premiere there on August 1.
