In the fall 2014, Star Wars and animation fans alike will be able to look forward to the next step in the franchise with Star Wars Rebels. The animated series will be a glimpse into the history of our favorite characters, elaborating on the 20 years worth of history between episodes III and IV.
Dave Filoni (Avatar: The Last Airbender), supervising director on the Clone Wars animated series, is set to head up the project. Joining him will be Greg Weisman (Gargoyles, The Spectacular Spider Man), and Simon Kinberg (X-Men: First Class, Mr. and Mrs. Smith). With this level of talent involved, my hope is for a great new story.
Rebels will air on Disney XD, premiering as a one-hour special in 2014. It's being described as an "action-filled series," and will follow the story of “a time where the Empire is securing its grip on the galaxy and hunting down the last of the Jedi Knights as a fledgling rebellion against the Empire is taking shape.”
Many Star Wars fans have mixed reviews regarding the animated Clone Wars. Some felt like Cartoon Network's hand in it made it too “kid-dish,” while others were happy to have a story fill in the blanks between Episode II: Attack of the Clones and Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.
It is the general hope then that with this new series, Disney will serve to find the middle ground between appealing to more of the mature audience while still keeping a great storyline.
