Terry Gilliam's '12 Monkeys' To Get the TV Treatment

Television has long been the bastard brother of movies, but the tides of quality are shifting, my friends. In a world of quality cable programs, TV is fast becoming the new frontier of unadulterated awesomeness. Next up on the front lines? A television series based on Terry Gillam's landmark 1995 science-fiction masterpiece 12 Monkeys — Brad Pitt and Bruce Willis sadly not included.

Here's the questionable news: The show is reportedly headed to Syfy, the network that deemed the traditional "SciFi" moniker to passé, the network responsible for Sharknado, the network that churns out a dozen duds for every Battlestar Galactica and Stargate SG-1… Did anyone try to reach out to HBO? Oh well. As a longtime fan of the genre, I can't help but cringe at Syfy's tarnished reputation, but maybe some kick-ass original content will turn that ship around — because Defiance certainly isn't.

All qualms aside, this is a momentous day for sci-fi fans — and Syfy fans. 12 Monkeys was a dark, slightly unhinged tale of time travel and the apocalypse, a true testament to the reach of the genre. In an entertainment world now largely dominated by teeny bopper versions of dystopia, the world of 12 Monkeys would be a welcomed jolt of political and moralistic complexity.

Just please don't screw this up, Syfy.
