Valve announced today the open beta for Steam Trading Cards, which are virtual collectible cards that you can get by playing certain games on Steam.
Unlike standard achievements people tend to get while gaming, this card system is intended to become more interactive. After collecting a set of cards, a player can earn items that allow further customization of one’s profile. A game that is participating drops half of a card set into the player’s Steam inventory, while the other half you would have to get from players. By clicking on the “Badges in Progress” tab on the badges page, a player can check who might have cards desired.
You will also be able to make badges from completed sets or from event participation. After making your badge, you will also get a random emoticon item, random profile background, a chance to get a discount coupon for another game or DLC, and 100XP that goes towards your Steam level.
The games that currently participating are CS:GO, Team Fortress 2, Dota 2, Portal 2, Half Life 2, and Don’t Starve. Other games will be part of the trading card system in the future. You can also contact the Steam Account Manager for further details on how to make a game part of the program. If you want to join the beta or want more information, click here.
